A canopy is very useful to block out the light and let the baby sleep without the annoying sun. Canopy is usually retractable or removable so it doesn't disturb if you want to change your baby inside the bassinet.
OP, I plan to have our baby in a bassinet in our room, but no matter what, we’ll have the baby in our room, even if he/she grows to big for the bassinet soon. We’ll put the crib in there if we have to.
We're not due until next spring, but we'll be moving into our house in a couple of months, and I'm trying to decide whether it's worthwhile to start the baby out in a bassinet or mini-crib instead of a full-size (and/or convertible) crib, either in our room or a nursery, and whether we should set up the spare bedroom as an office or nursery from the get-go. Any advice?
