"I went to do my first pump of the day and about five minutes in, it stopped working," Engman recounted later. "I am like: 'Oh no. This is not good. What do I do?' I went back to my desk and Googled 'Freestyle stopped working.' One of the results suggested calling Medela customer service."
Knowing that this is an OPEN-system pump, I became worried about these particles mixing in with the milk I was pumping for my child. I called Medela Customer Service to voice my concerns. I was told that these "particles" were being emitted from the inside of my pump. There were vents allowing the "particles" to come out and this is what we were noticing. The engineers were aware of this and since this was not "toxic" it was not being recalled and there was nothing they could do for me. When I asked how these engineers knew that those particles were not toxic, the customer rep could not respond to me.
Pump users, already dealing with the stress of caring for a newborn, can be emotional when they call Medela customer service. Some are panicking. Others cry. Some call from hospital rooms.
